What is an Aupair?

“Au Pair” is a French term translated as “on par” or “equal to” – meaning the au pair lives on equal terms with their host family. Au pairs come from another country and both the host family and the au pair have an interest in learning about each other’s customs and lifestyle through cultural exchange. An au pair must have experience caring for children, but it is not necessary to have formal qualifications in childcare. Au Pair lives with the host family integrating into their daily life, sharing meals, and making the family’s home their own, Au pairs take on a share of the family’s responsibility for childcare as well as light housework and receive a weekly stipend (pocket money) for personal use. This unique arrangement encourages cultural exploration and growth for both the host family and Au pair.
